EcoRes Forum: Earth Day 2007
Fighting Deforestation One Email at a Time: Tree Planting Sponsored on Behalf of E-Conference Participants
In honor of Earth Day 2007, the EcoRes Forum has made a donation in the name of Forum participants and team members to the organization Trees for the Future to sponsor the planting of 1,000 fast-growing seedlings. At present count, this equals just over one tree per participant, which Forum organizers hope will help offset part of the CO2 produced by the countless computer hours logged by participants and team members in preparing for, hosting, and joining this online dialogue.
With programs in more than 60 countries, Trees for the Future has been combating deforestation since the early 1970s in areas like Haiti, Senegal, Honduras, Belize, Uganda, India, and the Philippines (see http://www.treesftf.org/projects.htm).
Forum organizers encourage participants to make their own gifts at the Trees for the Future website, adding their efforts to help make this a 100% carbon neutral event by sponsoring additional plantings and helping to restore degraded land to a healthy and environmentally sustainable balance.
The EcoRes Forum wishes to thank each of our registrants for being a part of this virtual experience: One person at a time, YOUR efforts are helping to address the issues of climate change.
From Trees for the Future:
Welcome, and thank you for your kind support to keep this program growing worldwide. Trees for the Future’s program is now your program!
Your support comes at a time when the number of requests for help continues to rise dramatically. Your program is responding to these many requests and helping hundreds of communities to plant millions of trees.
The Central American program is reaching communities in several countries. It is assisting a massive collection of projects throughout Honduras, and in Belize, the program is establishing a tree seed orchard that will serve as a source of high-quality trees seeds for projects around the region.
The program in Asia is expanding quickly as new communities join the tree planting efforts. The projects in India continue to assist tsunami-effected communities to reforest degraded lands, and the program in the Philippines, now concentrated in the Zambales mountains, will soon start major projects on the island of Panay.
About 60% of all new projects are in Africa, where tree planting programs in Senegal, Ghana, and every country in East Africa are planting well-over a million trees every year to increase the productivity of sandy farmlands and to protect lands from desertification.
We will keep you up to date on what your worldwide program is accomplishing through the newsletter, e-newsletter, and web page. By passing this information on to others, hopefully you can help the program grow further.
Sincerely,
R. Grace Deppner, Administrator
